Stiftungen St. Gallen - Entgegen dem schweizerischen Trend hat die Zahl der Stiftungen in der Ostschweiz während der vergangenen Jahren stark zugenommen. Entsprechend viele gemeinnützige Stiftungen, Fonds, Vereine usw. sind in der Ostschweiz beheimatet, obwohl der Begriff "Ostschweiz" mal den Kanton Graubünden dazuzählt und mal nicht. Wir gehen hier von den Kantonen St. Gallen, Thurgau, Appenzell IR und Appenzell AR sowie Graubünden aus. Im Kanton St. Gallen sind 521 (Stand Ende 2022) gemeinnützige Stiftungen domiziliert. Mit rund 10 Stiftungen pro 10'000 Einwohnern ist die Stiftungsdichte im nationalen Vergleich eher mager und entsprechend gehört der Kanton St. Gallen zu den hintersten Rängen in dieser Statistik. Traditionsgemäss wirken Sankt Galler Einrichtungen primär in der Ostschweiz und sind stark in der Einzelfallhilfe bzw. Einzelfallförderung engagiert. So werden von vielen Stiftungen in der Ostschweiz Stipendien oder Notgelder an bedürftige Einzelpersonen gesprochen. Die Ostschweiz insgesamt, aber speziell das Sarganserland werden deshalb als "Stipendienparadies" bezeichnet. Auch in der Projektförderung sind bedeutende Stiftungen engagiert, ebenfalls mit Schwergewicht in der Region Ostschweiz. Aktionen wie Ostschweizer helfen Ostschweizer sind eine gute Veranschaulichung des philanthropischen Wirkens innerhalb der Ostschweizer Kantone und zeigen gut den Zusammenhalt dieser Kantone gerade beim gemeinnützigen Wirken auf. Zählt man das Fürstentum Liechtenstein zur Region dazu, sowie die grenznahen Gebiete Österreichs und Deutschlands, findet man einen regelrechten Hotspot gemeinnütziger Organisationen sowie philanthropischen Wirkens grenzüberschreitender Natur. Das sieht man beispielsweise veranschaulicht an den Spenderlisten gemeinnütziger Organisationen in Bregenz (AT). Diese setzen sich nämlich zumeist aus Förderern aller 4 Länder zusammen (inkl. Liechtenstein).

Foundation Report 2016 focused on Eastern Switzerland

The 2016 Foundation Report focused on eastern Switzerland. It stated that over 4.7 billion Swiss francs in foundation assets are located in eastern Switzerland alone. At that time, over 66 percent of foundations were located in the cantons of St. Gallen and Graubünden. Over 83 percent were under cantonal supervision, reflecting the regional funding activity or funding focus mentioned above.

Since 1990, the foundation system in eastern Switzerland has grown explosively, and charitable foundations have never been limited to the main towns, Georg Schnurbein continues. The university city of St. Gallen is home to university and university-related foundations - as well as the University of Applied Sciences of Eastern Switzerland

The fact that the University of St. Gallen (HSG) is domiciled in the city of St. Gallen also attracts a number of foundations. This is because universities usually set up their own foundations and invite donations for endowments, generate donations and often also engage in fundraising. For example, the HSG Foundation is affiliated with the university. In addition, there are some university-related foundations in the fields of research, science and teaching, such as the Max Schmidheiny Foundation at the University of St. Gallen or the Peter Häberle Foundation at the University of St.Gallen. These pursue university-related purposes.

The University of Applied Sciences of Eastern Switzerland has a similar effect, whereby foundations close to the universities of applied sciences, such as the Futur Foundation, are domiciled in the canton of St. Gallen.
