Im Kanton Basel-Stadt befinden sich per Ende Kalenderjahr 2022 rund 905 gemeinnützige Stiftungen. Der Kanton Basel-Landschaft zählt etwas über drei hundert gemeinnützige Stiftungen. Mit insgesamt über tausend Stiftungen ist die Region Basel in der Schweizer Stiftungslandschaft höchst relevant. Mit 46.0% weist Basel-Stadt die höchste Stiftungsdichte im ganzen Land aus. Basel wird als Stiftungshauptstadt der Schweiz und gar Europas bezeichnet. Deshalb werden gerne sogenannte Stiftungsrundgänge durch die Stadt organisiert, während welchen man diverse Stiftungen besucht. So geschehen im Jahre 2017 im Rahmen des europäischen Stiftungstages. Die bedeutende öffentlich-rechtliche Christoph Merian Stiftung teilt zudem seit dem Jahr 2022 zusammen mit anderen gemeinnützigen Stiftungen einen Geschäftssitz. Ein sogenanntes Haus der Stiftungen - ähnlich den Stiftungshäusern in Zürich und Genf. Die Idee ist neben infrastrukturellen auch inhaltliche Synergien zu nutzen. Dies verleiht dem Standort Basel noch zusätzliches Gewicht. Seit Juni 2023 befindet sich das Haus der Stiftungen Basel an der St. Alban-Vorstadt 12. Am einmaligen Ort für Basler Stiftungen sind u.a. die Gebert Rüf Stiftung, die Kahane Stiftung, die Thomi-Hopf-Stiftung und die Palatin Stiftung untergebracht (Stand September 2023). In Basel findet auch jährlich der Basler-Stiftungstag statt, welcher im Jahre 2011 zum ersten Mal organisiert wurde und seither jährlich von stiftungsstadt-basel.ch durchgeführt wird.
