Talmond

Project description
Putting Ghana on the table
We believe in celebrating the diversity of West African crops.
- Transforming neglected, climate and water resilient crops into delicious, healthy and organic food from West Africa for the global market.
- Creation of jobs that ensure a fair income for the people who grow these crops
We are building a new industry around Tropical Almonds (TAL) and White Fonio, focusing on Ghana and Europe as our first markets. The business model has already proven itself in small-scale production in Ghana. We will be pioneers in industrializing TAL in our own agroforestry cultivation and with integrated automated processes, which has never been attempted before. We also want to create jobs in West Africa and develop a unique know-how in valley and fonio cultivation and production.
Details:
We are developing the alternative protein landscape in sub-Saharan Africa by transforming the neglected tropical almond (TAL) and underutilized ancient fonio grain locally into novel plant-based milk alternatives. West Africa is a crop diversity hotspot, with many native (traditional and non-traditional) crops still under-exploited. By creating a sustainable, soil-regenerative agroforestry system around the cultivation of the tropical almond (TAL) involving around 1,000 small farmers, we will provide evidence of a concept for the cultivation of TAL and will plant 58,000 TAL on 470 ha of degraded land.
We are pioneers in industrializing TAL in our own nuclear agroforestry plantation and with integrated automated processes, which has never been attempted before. In this way, we are expanding and securing our source of supply for TAL and harnessing the economic potential of neglected crops by creating new value chains in sub-Saharan Africa. Unlike existing plant milk options, our products are unique because our approach is groundbreaking: we use novel ingredients that have the potential to create new industries. Our goal is to create resilient food systems by using water and climate resilient crops to promote biodiversity, sustainable agroforestry, smallholder integration and food security and sovereignty in Ghana. In this way we diversify our diet, which affects our health.
The tropical almond tree and fonio grain are both water-resistant and drought-tolerant plants that are hardy and prolific, suited to the growing challenges of a climate crisis. Through regenerative agroforestry to cultivate TAL, we aim to restore degraded soils, restore soil organic carbon, and protect water resources. Also, fonio, grown in Ghana's arid northern region, does not need a wet field or fertile soil - it grows as a grass on degraded, hard soil and yields a highly nutritious crop in just eight weeks. Its drought tolerance makes it ideal for the north's increasingly erratic and unpredictable rains.
Talmond has been producing in Ghana since 2019, is FDA certified and is now expanding into the global market. This requires considerable financial resources. Talmond has already received €150,000 in equity and secured €440,000 in grants. A letter of intent on loans was also signed. However, additional equity funds are required for this. Talmond is seeking additional impact investors. An investor pitch can be provided.
